MASTA in engineering is focusing on training the participants, mainly from the Asia-Pacific region, to have the solid theoretical knowledge and systematic expertise in the space technology applications. Participants are expected to have the ability of conducting the scientific research, exploring the applications or pursuing the professional careers in the related fields independently.
MASTA in law is focusing on training professional talents who are familiar with space law and policy for countries in the Asia-Pacific region and other developing countries. The participants will master and fully utilize the knowledge of space law and policy, while have the necessary knowledge of space science, space technology and space application, so as to engage in the works with regard to research on space law and policy, legal consulting and management of space activities, national space legislation and international space cooperation.
Participants are expected to have a good grasp and understanding of new technology and development in space science technology and applications, or the developing treads of the space law and policy. Participants are expected to finish the thesis which is having the certain practicability and application prospect.
3. Education Direction
On the basis of the regulations for core disciplines in the Space Science and Technology Education Center－Curriculum (A/AC. 105.649) issued by UN in 1996, the main directions are as follows:
(1). Remote Sensing and Geo-Information System (RS & GIS)
(2). Satellite Communications (SATCOM)
(3). Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
(4). Micro-Satellite Technology
(5). Space Law and Policy
(6). Space Science and Environment
4. Study Periods
Referring to the regulations in the Space Science and Technology Education Center－Curriculum (A/AC. 105.649) issued by UN in 1996, the whole study period is divided into two Phase:
(a) First Phase: course study for 9 months;
(b) Second Phase: thesis research for 12 months (either in China or home country)
The maximum of study period for MASTA is 3 years. The candidates should apply to extend their study period, if they have studied at Beihang University for 2 years.
5. Training Procedures and Requirements
The training procedures are as follows.
There are four stages: Formulation of an Individual Training Plan, Course Study, Thesis Research and Thesis Defense.
To ensure the quality of study, each participant will be assigned one tutor from Beihang University. In case of need, tutors from other institutes can be assigned either. Tutors are responsible for helping and supervising the participants on making the thesis plan, finishing the thesis proposal, conducting the scientific research and writing thesis, etc.
5.1 Stage Ⅰ: Formulation of an Individual Training Plan
The training plan consists of two parts: the Course Study Training Plan and the Research Project Training Plan. Under the guidance of tutors, participants are required to submit these two plans within 3 months after registration. Participants are encouraged to select the interdisciplinary research projects and/or projects which are having the potential benefits to home countries.
5.2 Stage Ⅱ: Course Study
Curriculum for international postgraduates includes the compulsory courses and optional courses.
The minimum requirement for compulsory course credits in First Phase is 27. There is no credits requirement for optional courses.
By referring to the regulations in the Space Science and Technology Education Center－Curriculum (A/AC. 105.649) issued by UN in 1996, the modularized curriculum is taken and its architecture is as follows:
Module 1: Common Platform Courses, credits≥11
Courses in Module 1 are compulsory in all directions.
Module 2: Compulsory Major Courses, credits≥10, no credits requirement for optional major courses.
Module 2 includes the fundamental major courses, core major courses and optional major courses. Each direction has an individual architecture. Module 2 is focusing on training the participants to have the fundamental knowledge, strengthen the skills in the experiment operation and broaden the understanding of the development and leading-edge application in space science and technology.
Module 3: Pilot Project/ Practice Course, credits≥6
Pilot Project/ Practice Course in Module 3 is compulsory in all directions and focusing on training the participants to put the knowledge and skills into practice. The topics of pilot project are suggested by tutors, other institutes and participants. This course is encouraged to be carried out in Team to provide the participants a chance to complete a task with teammates for developing the teamwork spirits.
5.3 Stage Ⅲ: Thesis Research
（1） LiteratureSurvey and Thesis Proposal（1 Credit）
The requirements for participants in completing the literature survey and thesis proposal are the same as those for Chinese postgraduates in accordance with Guidelines of Beihang University for International Postgraduates on Writing Literature Survey and Thesis Proposals.
Under the guidance of tutors, participants are expected to select their research topics closely related to the practical space technology application projects in their home countries.
Participants are encouraged to conduct research after register. The Literature Survey and Thesis Proposal are required to be finished during First Phase.
International postgraduates should renew Literature Survey and Thesis Proposal when changing in major or tutor, or when the research project is inconsistent with its thesis proposal. The second thesis proposal should be organized after one month of the first thesis proposal. The minimum duration from the second thesis proposal to the thesis defense should be 5 months. If someone failed to pass the second thesis proposal, his/her training program will be terminated.
（2） Midterm Assessment（1 Credit）
Midterm assessment should be completed at least three months before applying for thesis defense. The midterm assessment mainly covers: whether the credits from course study meeting the requirement, and the progress of research project.
Written warnings will be given to the students who fail the mid-term assessment.
（3） Academic Activities（1 Credit）
Participants should take an active part in the academic activities at least five times.
（4） Achievement and Publication
Participants are encouraged to publish academic papers during their study.
5.4 Stage Ⅳ: Thesis Defense
Degree thesis defense includes the fulfillment of the thesis qualification approval, academic misconduct literature check (AMLC), thesis review, and thesis defense qualification approval, degree thesis oral defense, etc.
Affairs related to the thesis review, defense and degree conferral for international postgraduates are the same as those for Chinese postgraduates and are implemented in accordance with the Temporary Implementation Regulations on Academic Degree Conferrals of Beihang University and The Management and Use of ‘Academic Misconduct Literature Check’ in Graduate Academic Dissertation of Beihang University (For Trial Implementation). The examination and approval materials and resolution should be written and archived in Chinese. The abstract of each thesis should be written in both Chinese and English. Either Chinese or English can be used in the thesis defense.
Master’s Degree in Engineering/ Master’s Degree in Law will be awarded to the participants who have passed the thesis defense and approved by Beihang Academic Degree Evaluation Committee.
6. Termination of Study
Participants will be terminated from the training program if any of the following cases occurs:
1、 The student fails in the entrance language examination and still fails after one semester’s academic probation;
2、 The student fails to complete the thesis proposal and fails to pass in the second time;
3、 The student fails to pass mid-term assessment;
4、 The student is disapproved to qualify to apply for the degree defense according to the Academic Misconduct Literature Detection result;
5、 The student has been disapproved when application for study period extension;
6、 The student exceeds the maximum of study period;
7、 The student applies for the termination of study at Beihang University;
8、 The student fails to meet the university’s other requirements and is not suitable to continue study.
Those who are terminated from the training program shall be conferred the Certificate of Successful Completion of the Courses if they have finished all courses’ study and meet the requirements of the training program. For those who fail to complete all courses’ study, only a certificate for the courses study is conferred.
This Master’s training program is suitable for the participants in the major of Space Technology Applications only.
