Poster Design Contest to Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of United Nations Programme on Space Applications

Time

2021.7.30 - 2021.8.25

Background

The space age began on October 4, 1957 with the launch of Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite. In the following decades, the range space applications is rapidly expanding and making increasingly important contributions to social and economic development.

At the first United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE) held in 1968, Member States recommended the creation of a dedicated programme in the framework of the United Nations. In 1971, United Nations Programme on Space Applications (PSA) was established in what was then the United Nations Outer Space Division. This year, the Programme marks its 50th anniversary.

The Programme has implemented a long-term initiative for the development of basic space science and for international and regional cooperation in this field on a worldwide basis, particularly in developing countries. Since its creation in 1971, the Programme has made substantial progress in furthering knowledge and experience of space applications around the world. Provision of country capacity-building, education, research and development support and technical advisory services by the Programme have all helped to reduce the gap between the industrialized and developing countries.

In order to offer the best possible education, research and hands-on opportunities to all the participants involved in the Programme, regional centres have been established in each region covered by the United Nations Economic Commissions: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Asia. Until now, six Regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education, affiliated to the United Nations, have been established. To ensure a common standard of teaching of the Programme at each Centre, education curricula have been developed in the major fields of space applications.

The support of Member States and their participation in the Programme are vital. It is only through the efforts of all nations that the Programme can achieve its primary objective of employing space technologies to promote sustainable economic and social development, thereby to benefit more people.
