History

 2013

In February 2013, the Chinese delegation proposed to establish a new regional education centre for space science and technology affiliated to the United Nations at Beihang University in the 50th Session of the Scientific and Technological Subcommittee of COPUOS.

In June 2013, the proposal submitted by the 50th Session of the Science and Technological Subcommittee was approved at the 56th Session of COPUOS.

On September 30, 2013, Beihang University passed the evaluation organized by UNOOSA with the conclusion of “Offered or Satisfactory” (OS).


2014

On March 14, 2014, the Premier of People’s Republic of China approved the establishment of the Centre in China.

From September 18 to 22, 2014, UN-SPIDER Short-Term Training Course was held in Beihang University.

On September 29, 2014, the 1st Global Networking Forum (GNF) on International Space Education was elaborated and hosted at the 65th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Toronto, Canada, Mr. Weng Jingnong was appointed as the chairman of the conference.

On November 17, 2014, the 1st Meeting of the Governing Board of the Centre was held in Beijing, Mr. Xu Dazhe, Administrator of China National Space Administration (CNSA), Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) was appointed as the Chairperson of the Governing Board. Mr. Tao Zhi, Vice President of Beihang University was appointed as Director of the Centre. Mr. Weng jingnong from International School, Beihang University was appointed as Deputy Director of the Centre, and Mr. Huai jinpeng, the President of Beihang University at that time, was appointed as Director of the Centre’s Advisory Committee.

On December 22, 2014, the 1st Session of APSCO Distance Training Course was held at Beihang University.


2015

Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the COPUOS was held in Vienna, Austria, representatives of the Centre were invited to attend.

From April 13 to 24, 2015, the 54th Session of the Legal Subcommittee of COPUOS was held in Vienna, Austria, representatives of the Centre were invited to attend.

From June 15 to 19, 2015, Dr. Gong Haoqin’s “Painting Exhibition on China’s Space Exploration——Flying with the Wings of art” was held successfully in the Mozart Hall of Vienna International Center, the Headquarters of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in Vienna.

In September 2015, the Centre enrolled international graduate students majoring in Micro-satellite Technology for the first time.

In October 2015, the Centre reconstructed and redecorated the hall.

On November 28, 2015, the 2nd Meeting of the Governing Board was held in Beijing, Mr. Xu Huibin, President of Beihang University, was appointed as the Director of the Advisory Committee.


2016

On March 8, 2016, The Chinese government approved the establishment of “China Space Day” on April 24 each year. To broaden the influence of China Space Day, uphold and endorse the astronauts’ spirit and inspire people at home and abroad, especially young people’s enthusiasm for advocating science, exploring the unknown, and daring to innovate, the Centre held the 1st Poster Design Contest for China Space Day in April 2016, the contest was well received and participated. It is now the brand event of the Centre which is held in April each year.

Since 2016, based on integrating existing teaching and practice resources, the Centre has elaborated a series of activities of “Journey of Chinese Aerospace Technology and Culture”, which have been strongly supported by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. This activity is held from March to June every year, through practice visits, academic lectures, student forums and other forms, is a bold attempt to innovate the education and training mode of the Centre.

From August 8 to 13, 2016, the Global Navigation Satellite System Training Course co-sponsored by the Centre and ARCSSTE-E was held in Ife, Nigeria.

In September 2016, the Centre enrolled international graduate students in Space Law and Policy for the first time.

From September 12 to 16, 2016, Mr. Sergio Camacho, the former Director of UNOOSA, was invited to visit the Centre and give lectures.

On September 26, 2016, the 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was held in Guadalajara, Mexico, representatives of the Centre were invited to attend and gave a report.

From October 14 to 16, 2016, Training on the “Belt and Road Initiative” Spatial Information Corridor Engineering Application was held in Beihang University.

On October 26, 2016, Dr. Luc St-Pierre and Dr. Shirish Ravan, Project Managers of Space Technology Applications of UNOOSA (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs) visited the Centre.

The Centre attaches great importance to the construction of volunteer team, encourages students to participate in the work of the Centre and makes suggestions for the development of the Centre. In December, 2016, Mr. Krishna Prosad Mondal, an international student from Bangladesh, was awarded the title of “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year”.

On December 6, 2016, the 1st Advisory Committee Meeting was held in Beijing, China, presided by Mr. Xu Huibin, Director of the Advisory Committee and President of Beihang University. Proposal for establishing the Alliance of Regional Centres (ARC) initiated by RCSSTEAP was discussed during the meeting.


2017

On February 15, 2017, Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, and Latin American students were interviewed by Spanish Channel of CCTV.

From 6 to 10 March 2017, Ms. Mazlan Othman, the former Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) visited the Centre and gave lectures.

On April 22, 2017, Madam Simonetta Di Pippo, Director of UNOOSA and six (6) permanent representatives at United Nations Office at Vienna (Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines and South Africa) visited Beihang University, accompanied by Mr. Wu Yanhua, Vice Administrator of CNSA and Mr. Xu Hong, Director-General of Department of Treaty and Law, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

From June 12 to 14, 2017,a delegation led by Mr. Huang Haijun, Vice President of Beihang University, attended the 60thSession of UNCOPUOS.

On August 14, 2017, the 1st Summer Camp of the APSCO Student Small Satellite (SSS) Project was held in Beihang University.

From August 21 to 24, 2017, “Southern Hemisphere Space Technology Application and Education Forum”, organized by the Centre, was held successfully in Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) and University of Brasilia.

On October 27, 2017, a Space Technology Applications Forum on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of Beihang University was held successfully by the Centre.

On November 29, 2017, the 3rd Meeting of the Governing was held in Beijing, Mr. Tang Dengjie, the Administrator of China National Space Administration (CNSA) at that time and Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), was elected as the Chairperson of the Governing Board.


2018

From April 12 to 26, 2018, Training on Space Cooperation for Global Health was held at Beihang University.

From April 11 to 23, 2018, the 1st Short Training Program of China-Arab BDS/GNSS Center was held in Tunisia.

From April 23 to 27, 2018, BDS/GNSS short training program was held in Morocco.

From July 30 to August 17, 2018, the 2nd Summer Camp of APSCO Small Student Satellite (SSS) Project was held successfully in Ankara, Turkey.

From October 22 to 26, 2018, Micro-satellite Technology Short Training Program was held in Morocco.

From April 24 to 25, 2018, Satellite Application and International Cooperation Seminar was held in Harbin. It was supported by Earth Observation System and Data Centre, CNSA and organized by Institute of Geography Science and Natural Resources Research, CAS, RCSSTEAP and Harbin Institute of Technology. This seminar is one of the series of activities.

From June 17 to 26, 2018, the 61st session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was held in Vienna, Austria, during which the UNISPACE+50 aerospace exhibition was held, the Centre set up its own booth in the name of the Alliance of Regional Centres (ARC).

From September 17 to 19, 2018, the 1st World Conference on Science Literacy was held in Beijing. Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre and Dean of International School, delivered a speech at the Parallel Session of the conference: “Space Exploration and the Future of Mankind” Forum.

On November 14, 2018, the opening ceremony of APSCO 10thAnniversary Conference was grandly held in Beijing. Mr. Xu Huibin, Director of the Advisory Committee of the Centre and President of Beihang University, was invited to be present. President Xu Huibin renewed the cooperation agreement between Beihang University and APSCO with Mr. Li Xinjun, Secretary General of APSCO. During the conference, Beihang University was conferred Best Space Education Cooperation Institute.

On November 20, 2018, the UHF/VHF/S-band APSCO Mission Control Centre & Data Process Archive Centre of Beihang was completed and put into operation.

On November 22, 2018, the 2nd Advisory Committee Meeting was held in Beijing. The meeting discussed the addition of Space Science specialty and other topics.

On December 9, 2018, Ms. Surucchawadi Seweewanlop, a Thai student from the Centre, won the first prize in “FLTRP Cup” English Public Speaking National Round Competition.


 2019

From March 25 to 28, 2019, Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, attended United Nations/Jordan Workshop: Global Partnership in Space Exploration and Innovation and delivered a report.

From April 1 to 2, 2019, the 2nd BeiDou Short Training Program of China-Arab States BDS operation Forum was successfully held in Tunisia City of the Republic of Tunisia.

On April 24, 2019, Mr. Tao Zhi, Director of the Centre and Vice President of Beihang University, led the delegation to attend the United Nations/China Forum on Space Solutions: Realizing the Sustainable Development Goals. During the conference, the Centre set up a booth independently, fully display the achievements made by the Centre in recent years and the development of the Alliance of Regional Centres (ARC) through displaying pictures, brochures and souvenirs, which was widely concerned and praised by the delegates.

On May 24, 2019, Mr. Carlos Augusto Teixeira de Moura, President of Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), paid a visit to the Centre.

On July 4, 2019, the Centre successfully accomplished the task of English training and testing for personnel selected by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) to work in the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

On September 11, 2019, Mr. Weng Jingong, Executive Director of the Centre, Dean of International School, Beihang University, was invited to attend the 10th Anniversary Conference of UNSPIDER. At the meeting, Beihang University was awardedValuable Contributionsby UN-SPIDER Beijing Office.

On December 9, 2019, the 4th Meeting of the Governing Board of Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (China) was held at the Conference Centre of New Main Building, Beihang University.

On December 10, 2019, the Meeting of Directors of the Regional Centres for Space Science and Technology Education (Affiliated to the United Nations) and the International Space Education Cooperation Forum were held at Beihang University.


2020

From March to April, 2020, Poster Design Contest for China Space Day 2020 was held by the Centre.

From May 14 to June 9, 2020, a series of lectures on space technology applications was jointly held by the Centre andRegional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for Western Asia (RCSSTEWA).

From July 6 to 7, 2020, An online workshop on the BDS/GNSS Technologies and Applications in Fighting COVID-19 was jointly held by International Cooperation Center and International Exchange and Training Center of CSNO, China-Arab States BDS/GNSS Center, and RCSSTEWA.

On September 25, 2020, the Centre successfully completed English training and testing for China National Space Administration (CNSA).

From August 24 to 29, and August 31 to September 5, 2020,Beihang University and APSCO Secretariat jointly organized the online Short Training Course on “GNSS/BDS Frontier Technologies and Applications” in Beijing, China.

From October 2 to 6, 2020, Dr. Jin Tian, an expert and associate professor of the Centre in GNSS Direction, attended the 2020 Future Space Scholars Meet (FSSM) and served as a judge on behalf of the Centre.

From October 18 to 30, 2020, the “2020 International Training Workshop on Earth Observation for Sustainable Development in Developing Countries” was held in Beijing, China.

On November 9, 2020, the Centre co-organized 2020 International Symposium on the Peaceful Use of Space Technology-Health (IPSPACE 2020) Space Education Forum. Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, was invited to attend and give a report.

From November 23 to December 14, 2020, Mr. Sergio Camacho, the former Director of UNOOSA, was invited to give online lectures to the participants of the Centre.

In December 2020, the 3rd Advisory Committee Meeting was held via-email.


2021

On April 26, 2021, an interview with Prof. He Linshu, the chief expert of the Centre, was broadcasted on the Science and Education Channel of Beijing TV.

On May 10, 2021, Prof. He Linshu was invited to gave online lecture on the theme of Chinese Space Station.

From September 27 to October 1, 2021, the 15th Meeting of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG-15) was held in Vienna, Austria. Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, delivered an online report on “Update of BDS&GNSS International Education and Capacity Building”.

At 18:51 on October 14, 2021, APSCO Student Small Satellite-1 (APSCO SSS-1), also known as “Beihang-Asia-Pacific-1”, was successfully launched by piggy-backing a CZ-2D rocket from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi, China.

From October 19 to 20, 2021, representatives of the Centre went to School of Geography and Environment, Jiangxi Normal University for research exchange.

On October 26, 2021, meeting on in-orbit operation of APSCO SSS-1 held. Mr. Tao Zhi, Vice President of Beihang University, attended the meeting.

On November 11, 2021, the first science popularization activity took place in Room 511 of the Centre and Micro-satellite Mission Control Center.

On December 28, 2021, the education and training seminar between Beihang University and Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) was held at Beihang University.


2022

In January 2022, the 5th meeting of the Governing Board was held via E-mail.

On September 14, 2022, representatives of the Centre participated in the China-Argentina Space Cooperation Forum, and Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, delivered a report at the Education and Training Symposium.

On October 10, 2022, the 16th Meeting of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG-16) officially opened. Dr. Jin Tian, experts in the direction of Global Navigation Satellite System made a presentation.

On October 14, 2022, the first anniversary of the successful launch of APSCO Student Small Satellite-1 (APSCO SSS-1), also known as “Beihang-Asia-Pacific-1”. The satellite was in good operating condition in orbit and the satellite mission was a complete success.

From October 17 to 21, 2022, training course on the Satellite Navigation and Remote Sensing Applications in China and Southern Africa was successfully held.

On November 10, 2022, the Centre successfully organized the 34th International Week of Science and Peace themed event - “Peaceful Use of Space Stations”.

On November 18, 2022, Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, was invited to attend the 2022 International Symposium on Peaceful Uses of Space Technology-Health and acted as moderator of the Conference.


2023

In April 2023, the Regional Centre's series of books, English Course for International Space Cooperation, published by Beihang University Press, was officially released.

On April 17, 2023, Lorant Czaran, Executive Director of the Beijing Office of United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), made his first visit to the Centre.

On April 21, 2023, Ms. Mazlan Othman, Former Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Malaysian astrophysicist and Academician of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences, visited the Centre.

On May 1, 2023, the delegation of the Secretary-General of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences (AUASS) visited the Centre and signed a Memorandum of Cooperation.

On May 24, 2023, seminar on the professional construction of Space Project Management (New Direction) was successfully held.

From October 2 to 6, 2023, the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaija. Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre, with Prof. Huang Hai and Associate Prof. Sun Liang, were invited to participate in the congress.

From October 11 to 12, 2023, representatives of the Centre participated in the Sub-Forum on Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief of the 2023 BRIDRREM Forum. Ms. Tan Yumin, Professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (RS&GIS), was invited to

On October 13, 2023, Mr. Driss El Hadani, Deputy Director General of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) visited the Centre.

From October 15 to 20, 2023 the 17th Meeting of the International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG-17) was held in Madrid, capital of Spain. Dr. Xiu Chundi, an expert in the direction of Global Navigation Satellite System of the Centre, and Ms. Guo Yuanyuan, the program director of the Centre, participated in the meeting. Dr. Xiu Chundi was invited to deliver a report.

From October 24 to 25, 2023, the Centre held satellite navigation education and training activities at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) in Alexandria, Egypt.

From November 1 to 4 , 2023, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) held the SSS-2B Operation Phase Review Meeting and the SSS Final Project Review & Close-out Meeting in Ankara, Turkey. Mr. Huang Hai and Ms. Chen Shenyan, Experts of the Centre in Micro-satellite Technology, participated in the meetings on behalf of the SSS-1 team of Beihang University. Professor Huang Hai made a summary report on the SSS-1 at the meeting.

On November10, 2023, the Centre successfully organized the 35th International Week of Science and Peace themed event - “Rural Revitalization and Social Development in China”.
