Background
On November 27 to November 29, the 10th Anniversary Ceremony of Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (China) (Affiliated to the United Nations) (RCSSTEAP) was held at Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University. The theme is “Space Education Fulfills Dreams; International Cooperation Lights the Future.” Ms. Aarti Holla-Maini, Director of United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), sent a congratulatory letter highly commending the Chinese government and Beihang University for their efforts and contributions in advancing international exchanges and cooperation in space science and technology education, while extending congratulations on the 10th anniversary of the establishment of RCSSTEAP. From November 27 to 29, 2024, RCSSTEAP successfully organized a series of commemorative events, marking its 10th anniversary. At the 10th anniversary meeting, Mr. Driss El Hadani, Deputy Director of UNOOSA, along with directors and representatives from other UN Regional Centres, conducted working sessions to further the creation of the Alliance of Regional Centers. This initiative seeks to improve cooperation and coordination among the Regional Centres.
Science and arts illuminate each other with reciprocal brilliance. The Centre has been following the development model of “University Based, Government Supported, International Joint, and Industry Participation (UGII)”, closely obeying the UN initiative of “Promoting the peaceful use of space technologies for the benefit of all humankind”, joining hands with ten (10) Member States to contribute to the international space industry. Through artistic innovation, it seeks to raise awareness around space science and technology, international collaboration, and the peaceful utilization of space resources.
Previous award-winning works were featured in the the “Inclusivity in Space” art exhibition held at the side of the UN Conference on Sustainable Lunar Activities in 2024.. Some outstanding artists received personal congratulatory letters from the Director of UNOOSA, Aarti Holla-Maini, congratulating them on their inspiring and motivational work.
Looking back on the year 2024, China’s space industry has been characterized by great achievements and fruitful results. The Chang’e 6 became the world’s first lunar mission to retrieve rocks from the far side of the Moon, launching on May 3, 2024, and lasting 53 days. It made major breakthroughs, securing 1935.3 grams of lunar samples from the far side and successfully returning them to Earth, to share with scientists and researchers worldwide, to deepen human understanding of the Moon. The infrastructure for deep space exploration has been improved, with the successful launch of the Queqiao 2 relay satellite, providing stable communication support for lunar exploration missions. The development plan for a Mars probe has been initiated, aiming to detect signs of life on Mars. The Shenzhou 18 and 19 completed manned missions, with astronauts setting a new record for the longest single extravehicular activity (9 hours) and conducting more than a hundred space science experiments. Core equipment such as the Long March 10 rocket, the Mengzhou manned spacecraft, and the lunar lander are now at the stage of preliminary prototype development, laying the foundation for a manned lunar landing by 2030.
CASC has not only made remarkable achievements at home, but also demonstrated its openness to international cooperation. China has deepened multilateral space cooperation through initiatives such as jointly launching a solar observation satellite with the European Space Agency (ESA) to advance space weather monitoring and research. Additionally, it hosted the first “China-Latin American and Caribbean States Space Cooperation Forum”, where agreements on satellite navigation and remote sensing were signed.
China’s space industry has made milestone progress in technological breakthroughs, international cooperation, and commercialization, contributing significantly to global space exploration.
