Executive Director of UN-SPIDER Beijing Office Lorant Czaran’s First Visit to the Centre

On April 17, 2023, Lorant Czaran, Executive Director of the Beijing Office of United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), made his first visit to the Centre. Mr. Weng Jingnong, Executive Director of the Centre and Director of the International Relations Department of Beihang University, together with Ms. Tan Yumin, Professor of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (RS&GIS), and other staff members warmly welcomed Mr. Lorant and his delegation.

They visited the construction and development gallery of the Centre, the Flight Control Center of Beihang Asia-Pacific-1 Satellite/Ground Command and Control Center of Small Satellite, the RS&GIS teaching laboratory, the intelligent classroom, the archives and library, etc., and were interested in viewing the winning works of the Poster Design Contest for China Space Day 2023 hosted by the Centre. Mr. Lorant expressed great approval of the training environment and infrastructure and spoke highly of the work done by the Centre.

Mr. Weng Jingnong briefed Lorant on the progress the Centre has made in talent training, scientific research cooperation, international exchange and capacity building. To this, Mr. Lorant said that the operation mode and construction results of the Centre in Beihang University could be considered as a model of UN-affiliated Regional Centres. The two sides exchanged views on education and training, curriculum construction, cooperation and exchanges, and development of the Centre.

Under the leadership and support of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the government of the People’s Republic of China, the Centre will continue to build a world-class international space education platform, implement the initiative of United Nations on “Peaceful Uses of Space Technology for the Benefit of Mankind,” make new and greater contributions to the implementation of the United Nations “Programme on Space Applications (PSA)”, and enhance the level of education in space science and technology as well as the capability of space technology applications of the Member States and other developing countries.
